Forty saves from Sergei Bobrovsky. A 3-0 lead before the game was ten minutes old. None of it was enough in Paradise, where the Vegas Golden Knights outshot Toronto 43-24 and stole a 4-3 win after overtime at T-Mobile Arena.
Jack Roslovic struck inside the first minute, Auston Matthews assisting. Easton Cowan made it 0-2 at minute four with Chris Tanev setting up, and Nick Paul's finish off Darren Raddysh's feed made it 0-3 at minute nine — three goals, three different scorers, nine minutes gone. Vegas finally answered at minute 18, Mark Stone beating Bobrovsky off Ivan Barbashev's setup, with Gavin McKenna in the box a minute later.
The second period flipped everything, Vegas winning it 2-0. Brett Howden, fed by William Karlsson, cut it to 2-3 at minute 22, and Jack Eichel tied it a minute later, unassisted — 3-3. Toronto's discipline then buckled — four penalties totalling eight minutes against Vegas's one for two. Oliver Ekman-Larsson sat twice, and Mark Stone took Vegas's only minor in the 38th. Both power plays came up empty, Vegas 0-for-4 and Toronto 0-for-1. The third produced nothing but Bo Groulx's minor at minute 49, and overtime delivered the verdict.
Eichel drove the recovery: a goal, an assist, six shots and a plus-2. Mitch Marner added an assist and five shots, Brett Howden chipped in a goal on three shots, and Adin Hill turned away 21 of Toronto's 24 attempts. Bobrovsky's 40-stop night stands as the game's cruellest stat line.
Toronto needed nine minutes to build its 3-0 lead. Vegas used the next 51 minutes of regulation, and then overtime, to take it apart — 43 shots at a time.
